dear friends,

Yesterday March 9 2008..was the Silang ...Tagaytay... Nasugbu via Matabungkay ...up Payapa..up mushroom burger down Silang 138kms painful ride.

this ride was postponed last week to give chance to more riders wanting to join our weekly "fun" ride.

the fil chi group met at Mcdonalds Macapagal 530am-545am.

my new teamrocka1bikeshop customer American rider Skipper Pineda (his father Filipino, mom is American) was there already at Mcdonalds when i arrived....

Skipper was at rocka1bikeshop last wednesday for a pair of Mavic Aksium training wheels...said he saw the rocka1bikeshop blogspot and wondering..

"Ray...ive read about your reports..im a duathlete...been on the bike for only 2 months...was stationed in Japan .....am staying in Pampanga now...
and i want to race...can i train with you guys march 9 and race under teamrocka1bikeshop later?"

to which i of course said yes. "Skipper..i hope you dont mind it...i try to bring somebody new as a wildcard in our weekly training rides...so my team can do "sparring" with the new guy...give it your best shot dont be shy..because today ..Skipper..you are the wildcard"....Skipper laughs..."no problem bro..i try to go up against your best riders.."he said

we drove our cars in convoy...and reached chan cu compound. park cars there and proceed to hook up with brothers baterna.

Brothers Baterna brought two other Team Logic Gate riders for this grueling climb and made true their promise "we will wait at the tagaytay rotunda for you guys coming from silang..then we ride together ray..." Quin Baterna said.

the american was on his big chainring fending off attackers......so going down nasugbu..eooww..this wasnt a slow warm up ride...its intense ride ...on the big chainrings...as the team logic gate wildcards went balistic. speed went up 52-56-60kph..down nasugbu.

we regrouped...then went to Matabungkay..where the speed was up again in no time as 11 bike crazy riders trained real hard today...as some of us will race in thailand in about 7 weeks. The factor that made impact today ....i dont know if you notice...was the strong headwind crosswind side wind..how come no tail wind?

anyway as before the american was with anyone who attempted to ride solo up front. this time going up Payapa.. tiboy reyes was the one up front so he was with the american rider for a very long time...until they lost steam near the finish line and got caught by that superboy saul and that teamlogic gate wildcard. the american he says he finished 4th.

im amazed at Carlos tan and philip go ..they left me behind. if there is any race route that i couldnt tame..Payapa..thats definitely one of the routes i dread.

Skipper said.."that was a lot of fun bro...i was looking forward for any downhill near the finish..but i saw hills going up and up..it was never ending...i didnt enjoy any view...all i saw were the hills in front of me...give me 6 months to train..and i will race very hard...i had fun. thanks for inviting me for this ride ...thats the longest ride ive done so far 138kms. that was a lot of fun..you guys are great..all are survivors..you didnt quit ."

we had lunch at mushroom burger then headed back to silang. we had nice time.i hope you enjoyed this ride. i know everyone who failed to finish our previous ride mcdonalds to payapa due to wet weather conditions the last time was very very very happy to have finished this ride. CONGRATULATIONS.

i was telling Skipper.."these guys are great..they dont need all these punishment ride..they can tuck in their comfortable beds wake up 10am as its a sunday..but this morning they wake up 4 am in the morning ready to roll by 530am..and still manage to ride and finish this terrible route. isnt that a tough 138kilometer course? these guys i ride with they are really bike crazy already..but these are the good guys...so its always fun to ride with them"

i look forward to ride with you guys again this sunday..Egat is near...thats gonna be fun!

the downhill to Nasugbu was easy..if you dont pedal...youd reach the bottom still...but if you do that youd be more than 10 minutes behind the front runners who were mashing large gears in a simulated suicidal downhill race til the intersection... Cheesy

the first pitstop was after the suicidal downhill ride at the end of nasugbu junction where we regrouped

the peloton lead (temporarily Cheesy) by bisekletaguy and aldicua towards the start of the climb in Payapa

talking group thats me with jojo baterna "your american import is strong rider ray"

there he goes...Skipper with the full sleeved jersey full length cycling pants

there he goes..atty tiboy reyes attacks at the climb in payapa..and skipper pineda thats my new teamrocka teammate in the blue jersey followed.....while we mere mortals get dropped.

this is my wife and daughter at fantasy world

the reason why l got delayed at the finish line was ....errr my wife and daughter wants to have my photo taken at fantasy world... Grin

"daddy the wind was so strong here at canyon woods!" my daughter said...thats taal lake home of taal volcano..smallest volcano in the world in the background.

"breathe in breathe out...breathe out breathe in ...breathe in breathe out...heck i cant breathe... i cant tame this mountain...i want another climb...ill be back a 3rd time..." my thoughts near the finish line.

this is the finish line after the long climb in payapa.

this is the mushroom burger display stand (fresh edible mushrooms for sale) . "daddy i bought some fresh mushrooms here at mushroom burger ..ill try make shabu shabu dish later with these mushrooms..." my wife said

Again very nice report Ray and always with pictures.
I second you on the Logicgate guys and brothers Baterna as they are very goodfellas who will make you comfortable around them right away. I think the payapa climb is their favorite 'secret' training ground to get fit. The payapa climb is a hellish 10kms going back to the Nas-Tag junction. Just for perspective, in Payapa its very easy to hit way past 55kph just by coasting going the opposite.

dear hdreynolds, al and frondriest,

thanks so much for reading the report...always easier for me to write the report than the ride itself..good thing my wife takes good fotos...the rides are harder..im concentrating more how NOT TO get dropped. easier said then done...amazing how many people read cebucycling and the reports..here is the letter of tiboy reyes yesterday...

raymond see

hi guys,

we have been doing hard long rides for the past few sundays. let's scale back and do an easy ride this sunday so we can have the energy to do consecutive long rides during the holy week .

what do you think about doing the cogeo-sierra madre-sampaloc route? the total distance is about 78km... but if you want to make it more difficult... we can make the u-turn at bugarin instead of sampaloc ha ha. we can meet at burger king marcos highway at 6:30am.

raymond,

you are becoming a celebrity. yesterday i had to take my wheelset to cartimar for some adjustment. i normally take the lrt to pasay since it is faster than driving. at the 5th avenue station, the security guard did not want to allow me to bring along my wheelset because he said that it may hurt other passengers?Huh?

i was about to argue with the guard but then, the guy at the ticket booth saw me and told the guard to allow me to enter. when i was buying the ticket he chatted with me (it was at 12noon so the station was not crowded). he said that he is also a cyclist and he is from bulacan. so i told him that i ride with a bikeshop in plaridel, rocka1, and he immediately mentioned he knows rocka1 and that he always read bisikletaguy's reports at cebucycling.

cheers,

tiboy

here is my letter sent to tiboy today....

dear atty tiboy,

the lrt incident thats funny....im sure the teller ..when he saw you he got goosebumps.."man thats tiboy reyes the one who broke away in Payapa with the american in the bisekletaguy report" ...so thats why he told the guard..." guard pasok na yan...VIP yan...sikat yan..." hahaha

but you know... my bikeshop business gets extra boost by the rocka1bikeshop blogspot...lately almost 50 percent of my new customer read the blogspot...then buy spareparts or new bike! somebody from Bacolod order ultegra sprocket and shimano wheelset even...and request send to bacolod. So this makes my wife happy...

also healthwise naman..eh we come clean..we do exercise..have spaghetti only..so am sure my heart doctor also will be happy.

the weekly long ride is big thing nowadays....people want to join us.

skipper the American says he wants to climb Payapa twice...skip the nasugbu long ride..start at the foot of payapa...climb payapa go left... down nasugbu..left turn at junction...climb up payapa again.

am sure you boys will be up for the challenge...lets schedule it later.

teamrocka will want a recon ride of el kabayo in subic....if you guys want a subic training ride..let me know.

see you on the road soon.

thanks so much to tiboy albert philip carlos saul for joining me last sunday in the very difficult payapa ride..it wouldnt be that much fun if you leave me alone to be devoured by team logic gate..hahaha

Clark Airforce base training ride 100kms Oct 2, 2005

FROM THE PAST....
Just too tired at work this week so i requested best buddy jojo cardenas to pick me up by 5:45am. when we arrived inside Clark...the entire waterwood team was arriving in succession...head count was 16 riders including our domestiques...plus add about 10 Clark air base regular riders who does domestique works for Leian Cruz...

TEAM WATERWOOD REPORT.TRAINING RIDE.CLARK AIR FORCE BASE CLEAR WATER COUNTRY CLUB ROUTE...ESTIMATE 100KM SUNDAY OCTOBER 2, 2005 PHILIPPINES

As per suggestion of team waterwood manager Engr Rolly Cruz...Team Waterwood Park Cycling Club went to Clearwater country club in Clark Airforce base in Pampanga today for the scheduled 100kilometers training ride. This sunday was to be our 3rd consecutive 100kilometers training ride...the objective being to build base mileage and endurance for the forthcoming Powerbar Matabungkay 2 day cycle race end of Oct and the 3 days stage race to be held in Baguio City by Masters Cup organizers end of November.

My new super domestique Norberto Daa (Bulacan State University Scholar but electronic engineering undergraduate) decided not to ride the team vehicle and pedalled all the way from bulacan town to clearwater which is about 60kilometers so that he can familiarize himself with the new bike....an ABE MALDEA prestige tubing custom made bike which used to belong to jojo cardenas but fits Norberto Daa perfectly.

The other domestiques includes our driver bodyguard Robert Batoon...and super domestique Perfecto Legaspi Jr (pipoy) who didnt make it to the Tour of Luzon eliminations ONLY BECAUSE HE IS BUT 16 years old. and the age qualification is 18 years....extremely strong rider and future bet of bulacan town.

Our American teammate Mitch Kaminski made it inspite of hectic schedule...im delighted because he is a climber...i say the route has 50kilometers of climbs and suits him perfectly! he laughs.

Richard Uy, Shintaro Valdes, kaye Lopez, dondie azarcon ,dennis dionisio, jojo cardenas , engr rolly cruz, dondie azarcon and ren badelles were also present..

Dondie now got Mavic Ksyrium wheelset and a PROFILE DESIGN aero set up on his new Giant T mobile Carbon bike. i said better be careful...the aerobars dont have brakes. he says he will stay away so nobody gets run over by him. everbody laughs.

I saw richard looking a bit tired...he says he rode with Chris Pollard of G cash and was so tired yesterday...he asked to be excused by 50kms mark...i said yes of course...however the rest of the squad got to ride 100kilometers as we havent ridden the entire week.

So by 7:30 we are off on the training ride....we went climbing by the wall going to the otso otso route which used to be the route of the John Wilkie races and WCAO race last year....

The speed for the first 15kms was too high. 27 to 35kph over the climbs...i told engineer rolly...i couldnt sustain this pace....maybe some of us wants the otso otso route...others could take the clearwater route? engineer rolly says yes...Norberto Daa arrives...i stick to my domestique like a leech...the peloton asks me to slow down...i said dont worry about me im giving this guy FREE LUNCH... to just coach me and let me know my climbing mistakes (sorry...its a secret)....by the 2nd lap...we got caught by Leian Cruz the wonder boy...riding a yellow Cervelo with aeroset up...speed was an incredible 38kph up the climbs with Leian, Shintaro, kaye, dennis, macmac, richard uy, Clarck domestiques and our bulacan domestiques pipoy and robert doing pulls. i told Norberto (bitoy) just teach me how to climb properly never mind the fast riders...he agrees then teach me hands on on how to climb properly... i got dropped.

I couldnt match the pace of my domestique and he turns right again at the otso otso route...i decided to make left turn and take clearwater route....i was alone by myself when i got caught by an incredibly fit Engr Rolly Cruz up the climbs...i said ""VERY GOOD BOSS"" ....in his splendid WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP jersey he looked like Lance Armstrong...riding a TREK US POSTAL...

I wore a red SAECO CANNONDALE full zipper jersey and looked like GIBI SEEmoni? on a SEVEN ODONATA with Wound up carbon fork.

While climbing (with me gasping for breath...) he asks me about the ODONATA .... i said...yes its a laid back bike...and very good in climbing, cornering and descending...overall...a PERFECT BIKE.

He said...""very good... so its worth the money?"" i said ""YES!""

I said he should get one of those SEVEN TITANIUM bikes too...but he says...he has already mastered the TREK OCLV carbon....and will probably keep the bike for a few more years...

He says we will just stick together...go down the clearwater route...then go to mabalacat gate...then climb up the wall...then clearwater and climb the wall 2 more times...and that should be 100kms.

On our 3rd lap going to mabalacat...we saw the group of shintaro, leian, richard, dennis and other domestique stop by the 50kilometers mark....turns out that dennis dionisio crashed on the lolipop section...then the group stopped and returned to parking lot near clearwater...there the local pampanga clark regular cyclists requested for a bente bente race...and our group obliged...our domestique pipoy and bitoy won...leian is third...

Meanwhile...myself and team manager engr Rolly Cruz continued with our suffering...we caught the group of Mitch Kaminski...Ren Badelles...Jojo Cardenas and Kaye Lopez up the wall...engrrolly cruz takes the pull at 28kph...i swap at 24kph...ren swapped at 28...mitch swapped at32 then the group disintigrates....with only jojo cardenas able to hang on to our climber american teammate Mitch Kaminski...

End of 100 kilometers jojo cardenas beats Mitch at the finishing sprint...followed by kaye lopez and Ren...

I together with engr Rolly Cruz finished together...happy with our improved fitness level...having no cramps at all after 100kms...3 hours 40 minutes on my speedo at 28kph average including the climbs...we are all very happy.

We took lunch at bulalo station...had great story telling...then decided our next ride on sunday... Isuzu Alabang to puerto Azul and back...130kms? if you wish to join our rides next sunday...please let me know...

Ride safe and hope to see you all soon.

Waterwood Park to Gapan and back 107kms 9-18-05

FROM THE PAST.....

Team Waterwood Report: Sept 18 2005 long ride 107km Waterwood Park base camp to Gapan Nueva Ecija and back

Guys,

Here is our report.

Following the recent success of waterwood riders at a the keirin style mano y mano race....team manager Engr Rolly Cruz...reiterates the need for waterwood riders to do long rides and accumulate base mileage. He says...if only we could train as hard and as long as the other teams...waterwood team would have been more competitive... Last sunday it was agreed upon that there will be a long ride today Sept 18. However ..a typhoon had brought rains to entire Luzon area (including bulacan for over 5 consecutive days since monday...so nobody had really rode the entire week!)

By friday .. engr rolly cruz calls me up over the celphone and tells me...if sun shines on saturday...post a map of waterwood base camp location over the email and invite anybody who wants to ride the long ride with us.

The sun did shine on saturday...so i called up best buddy jojo cardenas for us to do 1 hour ride inside waterwood to loosen up.

Come sunday morning ...i got a call from teammate Richard Uy...he says Shintaro Valdez and Kaye Lopez is with him and wants to ride...Dondie says he picked up Alaska strongman Raul Luminario together with Moises Zaplan and they too want to ride...I panicked and called up my lieutenant super domestique Rommel Punongbayan and 2nd lieutenant Ryan Balangon...just in case i get dropped...these guys get Free lunch just to bridge me over the peloton....in case i get dropped.

By 6:30am engr rolly cruz calls me up saying the assigned driver for sag vehicle couldnt make it. i say i got to turn back and hire the services of the father of my 2nd lieutenant Ryan Balangon ...because waterwood never makes a long distance road trip without a team vehicle.

We arrived at the waterwood base camp by 7:30...as soon as we arrived...everybody heads out of base camp and our ride is underway. 20 riders headcount. ...i say to our team waterwood regulars...now is the chance for you to feel how it is to join Masters cup...because with all the invited guests this looks like a mini masters cup race in the works...

The speed picks up immediately..because no beginners were in sight...everyone has gotten the itch to pull harder...because there was very wet weather for the entire week....so our bente bente long slow ride picks up speed to 40kph by the first 10kilometers and me and my domestiques breaks off the peloton and soon out of breath from chasing...by 15kilometer mark...jonathan eugenio...

former track star...now waterwood head coach becomes first casualty as he got broken chain and so gets to ride team sag wagon...by 25 kilometers Richard uy gets a flat...everone is delighted and everyone stops for the short rest.

After Richard repairs his flat speed picks up again and i am yoyoing at the back...clearly in trouble. Guest Rider Alaska strongman Raul Luminario was setting a 38 to 40 kph speed up front. my super domestiques attack to break up the pace...Raul chases and as soon as he settles at the back of my 1st and 2nd lietenant i attacked...textbook style. Raul gets caught flatfooted then mounts a chase...together we ride breakaway style....until im out of breath...Richard uy leads out the peloton and catches us and from then on...Richard and Raul took turns to pull and a gap forms again...

3 to 4 waterwood riders couldnt catch their breaths...got left behind...my 2nd lietenant ryan balangon suffers a puncture by 40kms mark...out of the running...i called out my first lieutenant to start pulling up front ...he says "" sorry boss...am cramping..."" waterwood regular Sonny Pantua suffers broken spokes and gets a lift...luckily as per plan by 45kilometers mark...we slowed down and had breakfast at Jolibee Gapan Nueva Ecija. Jonathan Eugenio fixes his chain and sonny pantua skipped breakfast to replace his broken spoke so they could ride the return trip home.

After breakfast...we are at it again...the group is really going too fast over the straight and open roads of Gapan going to San Luis...slowing down only in the town markets due to traffic.....and also on rough road patches.

There is still 60kilometers of open road again...at one point...waterwood regulars gets red in the face...a gap had been formed and it was Team David's Salon beauty Kaye Lopez who goes up front and pulls the chase group... amidst shouting by bystanders....a lady pulling 12 guys at the back?

As soon as the bridge had been gapped the peloton rides again at 38 to 40kph being pulled by raul luminario and richard uy again...

My super domestique rommel punongbayan rides up to me and says...""boss you better stick it out in the middle of the peloton...because im breaking away by last 20kilometers to the finish...then you can follow me.""

(The pull was so hard....the ""breaking away idea"" never materializes because by 90kms mark my super domestique rommel gets double cramps and had to ride team sag wagon).

By 80kilometers mark near Candaba....my group got gapped when we have to chase guest rider Moises Zaplan when he failed to go right turn and got lost......together with millionaire Dondie Azarcon, Moises Zaplan, boss Dodong, and domestique Rommel we tried to swap pulls to close our gap...unfortunately by 90kms mark Dondie Azarcon runs over a pothole and suffers rear end flat...game over for him and he gets to ride sag wagon....Boss Dodong and my domestique rommel punongbayan also suffers cramps and rides sag wagon...by 90kilometers mark.

So im left with 10.5kms to ride with Pldt guest rider Moises Zaplan swapping pulls until we reach Waterwood Base Camp 107kms....we were very happy to finish the 107kms...

Everyone was very happy...im very impressed with team manager Engr Rolly Cruz and Jojo Cardenas and Michael Miranda and Richard Uy...and also our guest riders Shintaro and Kaye...Moises Zaplan of Pldt ...that Alaska strongman Raul Luminario...wont you consider applying for Team Waterwood? hahaha

Richard, Shintaro and kaye have to go home early...as for us...its chowtime...so we went to the Bulalo Republic...bulalo specialty house near waterwood and had lunch and great story telling again...

For those who missed this ride....waterwood announces we will be riding alabang by daang hari to tagaytay via amadeo next sunday...in case you want to ride with us...we will be very happy...friendly style racing only...

We look forward to riding with you again soon...

Thanks so much to our guest riders who found time to join our once in a blue moon 100kms training ride.

See you again soon

this ride was organized by mr philip go with eddie b as navigator. it is the weekly 100kms per sunday training ride being conducted by teamrocka filchi partiicpants to Egat 2008...for this ride we were very happy to have the brothers baterna...the managers of teamlogic Gate.. big boss architect Quin and his brother Q baterna who will be part of our group to see action in Bangkok Thailand May4-7 2008 . Thanks so much architect quin and jojo for joining our ride. Cheesy

Island cove resort in cavite is where we parked our cars assembled our bike and get ready for the 106 kilometer cavite to tagaytay via Mendez /amadeo roundabout ride

this is the pre ride usual getting to know you chit chat..."guys ..i invited the baterna brothers of teamLogic gate to join our training ride...as we will be riding with them in Egat Thailand in May..so we better train together so we know each other well..serve as each other's buddy when we are on the race in thailand..." thats me introducing the baterna brothers to the teamrocka fil chi egat participants.

architect Quin Baterna showed up with this beautiful new baby...a flat black dura ace equipped Bianchi Reparto Corsa ...."this is what i will be riding in Egat Thailand ray....better than my previous bike...its good on the climbs..responsive on the crits...." architect quin baterna said. "WOW thats beautiful architect Quin!.....but dont forget...in case you need the glass aluminum and stainless steel requirements in your call center projects...please give me a call....as im the prefered stainless contractor of gen con RDTorres...so my company is the one supplying Accenture Cybergate with the office main entrance doors and stainless steel door handles and accessories "....i said plugging in my company RMRmetalfab and trying to coax architect quin baterna for some business... so this was a business and pleasure bike ride Grin

close up of the Bianchi

the ride up Mendez was painful..brothers baterna were very strong riders...and Q Baterna was animator supreme...attacking at each incline and making each WELCOME ARC... an imaginary finish line...only Tiboy Reyes and Saul Sibayan was able to hang on to Q baterna..while rest of the group decides to ride their own pace...wow the ride up mendez isnt steep..buts its looong and painful incline...we decide to stop by Mushroom Burger in Tagaytay and replenish lost calories... Grin

ride down Amadeo was no problem...but this group is really flying by now as the speed soared up 40-45kph on the downhills...we managed to reach Island cove about 12pm..in time for a nice lunch...thaks so much for the nice lunch courtesy of our friend philip...the seafood carbonara was great..the ladies who served us lunch (sorry no fotos) were beautiful ....when will we have lunch here again atty tiboy? Grin"""

thanks so much for all those who joined us in this training ride...atty tiboy reyes, philip, saul sibayan, eddie B., ali, brothers quin and Q baterna.

we look forward to ride with you again and every sunday in preparation for Egat.

thanks so much...
